Transitional Housing Program - The Eric Johnson House
The Transitional Housing Program has the capacity to house ten homeless individuals at a time for a period of up to 24 months as they attempt to locate and develop the skills necessary to obtain and maintain permanent housing.  Individuals who enter our transitional housing program come primarily from living on the streets, places not meant for human habitation, or in emergency shelters.  Currently there are no other programs in Morris, Sussex, or Warren counties to help meet the specific needs of this vulnerable group.  Without the housing and intensive supports provided by The Eric Johnson House, these individuals with HIV/AIDS would not be able to regain control of their own lives, thus falling through the cracks, caught in a vicious cycle of homelessness.

While residing in The Eric Johnson House, individuals receive the following on-site services:
        •  Case Management
        •  Substance Abuse Counseling
        •  Mental Health Therapy
        •  Medication Management
        •  HIV Information and Support Services
        •  Buddy/Companion Services
        •  Daily Living Skills Training
        •  Employment Assistance
        •  Money Management Training
        •  Permanent Housing Locator Services
        •  Information and Referral Services

The combination of secure stable housing coupled with the array of supportive services provided, gives residents the tools needed to
improve their health status.  Providing the basic necessities of shelter and food in a supportive caring environment allows individuals to focus their energies on dealing with their HIV status and address the multiple reasons for their homelessness.

Upon completion of Transitional Housing program, each resident will have built a comprehensive support network of service providers and emotional supports, as well as developed the skills necessary to maintain permanent housing and become productive members of the community.  In order to ensure continued stability for these participants, at the suggestion of residents ready to move out, we developed The Eric Johnson House Aftercare Program.   To read more about the Aftercare Program click here.

Permanent Housing Programs
New Jersey AIDS Services
has three Permanent Supportive Housing Programs:

       •  Housing Opportunities for People With AIDS (HOPWA) Housing Vouchers: Allows us to
offer rental assistance to three people who are living with HIV/AIDS.

        •  Shelter + Care Housing Vouchers: Allows us to offer six transitional housing
graduates rental assistance when they are ready to transition into permanent housing.

        •  State Rental Assistance Program (SRAP) Vouchers: Allows us to assist an additional 10              graduating transitional housing residents for a period of 5 years.

The HOPWA, Shelter + Care and SRAP vouchers require that each resident pay 30% of their income towards rent.  The voucher pays the difference directly to the landlord.  This assistance allows each resident the ability to afford living in Morris County and to continue to be a productive member of the community.  These programs also provide for the necessary supportive services that help stabilize each person in their new home.
